New Labor Law: A 4-day week?

About the law

Employers can move towards a four-day work week, but the codes allow them to increase daily work hours from 8 mandated now to 12 daily. This implies that employees wishing for a shorter work week will have to put in more work hours on their working days.

What does it mean?

The employees in a company could choose to work for only 4 days a week, and the rest of the days would be a holiday or weekly off. But, in that case, their daily working hours will increase to 12 hours or more for those four days. This means that the employees who continue to work according to the 5 day work week plan will be expected to work 8 hours a day at most.

Implementation

Are you a student who imagines your future job to be hectic, where there is all work and no play? However, the times have changed since the situation was equivalent to the assembly line office environment, and there is quite an evolution for healthy work culture; there are job roles that drag the employees into stressful situations and intrude on their work-life balance. An employee can expect a great deal of workload even today.

This law was inspired by the remote work culture initially adopted during the Covid-19 pandemic. It was proven more effective than in-office work culture, allowing companies to hire talented and skilled individuals beyond geographical bounds. According to a study by Texas A&M University, there was no loss of productivity by the implication of the remote work culture, and so the does the claims of new labor law tell us.

The whole world is slowly adapting to the new 4-day work week. According to a study by Forbes, most companies participating in a four-day workweek program in England noted that they had not seen any loss of productivity during the experiment. Contrary to the expected outcome, there has been a significant improvement, according to a published survey.

There are many ways the companies have tried to make their office a habitable place for the employees to control attrition levels and help them become more productive, which is beneficial to the business.

Implementing this rule aims to increase the quality of work done by the employees. A decrease in stress levels and a lower burnout rate will make the employees love their work and help them improve their work-life balance, which could be one of the best practices of the work culture in the companies and the country at large.

The critical part of the law is its implementation. Many companies with a more significant amount of work would not be happy with implementing such a work culture may lead to a less focused workspace. However, companies like Wipro, which has given its employees an 11-day break for better mental health, would take up the initiative of such a work culture to take care of the mental health of their employees.
